You’ve seen it too many times now – in photographs and in the mirror. That extra layer of fat beneath your chin that makes you look older and heavier than you actually are. There’s no need to keep getting frustrated by your double-chin. With some simple activities and procedures, you can get the sleek, defined chin you’ve been wanting for so long.

Causes

There are a variety of factors that can lead to the development of a double chin. One is genetics. You will have a higher chance of having a double chin if other family members also have them. Higher weight is another factor, creating an extra layer of fat in the chin and neck area, also called submental fat. Additionally, as you age, your skin loses its elasticity and starts to sag in areas that were previously tight. A common area where this happens is your chin and neck area. Finally, poor posture can create a double chin, loosening muscles in your face and neck.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the easiest things you can do to tighten the skin and lose the extra layer of fat around your neck and chin. Sometimes called facial yoga, these exercises help to firm up the area where you have the double chin. It’s easy to find these exercises on the internet – simply do a search for “facial yoga” and you will find instructions and videos that will help you create a facial workout plan. All of the exercises are simple and can be done in a matter of minutes, only taking up a small portion of your daily routines. One such exercise is often called “Kiss the Sky” or “Whistle at the Ceiling” and involves keeping your back straight while you tilt your chin toward the ceiling, pucker your lips, and hold this position for about 20 sections, repeating 10 times.

Weight Loss

Sometimes weight gain contributes to the formation of a double chin. Simply shedding those extra pounds can reduce the layer of fat under your chin. While there are many diet plans offered to those wanting to lose weight, there are also some simple steps you can take that are highly effective in helping you reach your weight loss goals. A combination of changes in your diet and the addition of exercise to your daily activities can lead to substantial weight loss. The Mayo Clinic suggests that in order to lose 1-1.5 pounds a week (a safe and sustainable rate of weight loss), you should reduce your daily caloric intake by 500-750 calories. Much of this reduction in calories can be achieved by cutting down on your consumption of sugars, saturated fats, and processed foods, while also practicing portion control. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, or an equivalent mix of the two each week. You can choose the types of activities that you most enjoy, from walking to swimming to group fitness classes. Some of your daily activities, like cleaning, playing with your children, or yard work, are moderate-intensity activities that can lead to weight loss and the thinning of your face.

You may find that you need to pursue a more involved procedure to get rid of your double chin. Coolsculpting is a non-invasive procedure that freezes your excess fat so your body can metabolize and thus eliminate the fat. This freezing of fat cells (called cryolipolysis”) creates a gradual change in the treated area over time with results becoming apparent in 1-3 months post-treatment. Another minimally invasive procedure is mesotherapy, which also works to have your body metabolize fat cells. Through a series of injections that dissolve your fat cells, the treated area may see a tightening of the skin as the fat is thinned.

Laser

While sometimes called “laser surgery”, laser treatment is actually a non-surgical procedure that uses a guided laser to melt the fat tissues right below the skin. The benefits of laser treatments include minimal downtime following the procedure, only needing a local anesthetic during the procedure, and quick treatment time.

Liposuction

If you want quick results and don’t mind undergoing simple surgery, liposuction might be the best option for removing your double chin. Liposuction physically removes the fat under your chin in a straightforward one-hour procedure that might only require local anesthesia. You will experience bruising and swelling following the procedure, but with only one surgery needed, your body will quickly heal, and you’ll be left with a newly contoured jawline. Don’t let your double-chin cause you another day of frustration. Contact the experienced dermatologists at Vanguard Dermatology to find the best plan for getting rid of your double chin. Vanguard Dermatology in the greater New York City area offers a number of the procedures described here as well as guidance in lifestyle changes that can give your face its best shape.
