Why is my stomach still fat after liposuction?

Liposuction techniques cannot access the visceral fat cells. Therefore, if you have deep fat cells around your internal organs, this will remain following your procedure. As a result, your stomach will not be flat even after liposuction.

If you’ve had liposuction of the abdomen, you are probably expecting your stomach to now be flat and flawless. It’s important to be aware that, at first, at least, you may still notice a bulge. If you’re worried about the appearance of your tummy following your procedure, you’ll find advice here.

Swelling after Liposuction

When you undergo a liposuction procedure, swelling is a natural side effect. Bear in mind that you have just been through a surgical procedure. Swelling is the body’s natural response to this kind of trauma. That doesn’t mean there’s a problem or that the surgery has gone wrong. All it means is that your body is healing and will take some time to take its new shape. It can take several weeks or even months to see the outcome of your cosmetic surgery. Immediately after you have lipo on your stomach, you’ll notice that your abdomen still looks swollen. Rest assured. This is almost always temporary. You must follow your surgeon’s advice and wear your compression garment as prescribed. You will soon notice that the swelling begins to subside. Before you know it, you’ll have a wonderfully flat stomach that exceeds your expectations.

Are There Any Other Reasons for A Belly Bulge after Stomach Lipo?

Occasionally, a patient may notice that she still has a belly bulge following lipo because of tissue laxity. In some cases, the stomach muscles may be lax, often because of childbirth. This can result in the abdomen still looking swollen even after liposuction. Liposuction cannot correct lax muscles or skin. A tummy tuck procedure is, therefore, the best option for such individuals. In a few cases, a belly bulge following stomach lipo may result from intra-abdominal fat. Liposuction techniques cannot access the visceral fat cells. Therefore, if you have deep fat cells around your internal organs, this will remain following your procedure. As a result, your stomach will not be flat even after liposuction. One further reason for a belly bulge after lipo is a medical complication called a hematoma or seroma. If this is the cause of your swelling, you must seek medical attention to resolve it.

How Can I Avoid A Belly Bulge Following Lipo?

The above scenarios are uncommon following stomach liposuction as long as you choose an experienced cosmetic surgeon. A skilled surgeon will determine whether he or she can remove your abdominal fat via liposuction. If you have visceral fat, the surgeon will tell you that he or she cannot remove those deep cells. The surgeon will also determine whether you have any muscle or skin laxity that could affect your outcome. Therefore, the surgeon will tell you whether a tummy tuck would be a better procedure for you. A skilled and experienced surgeon will also be less likely to cause a hematoma or seroma. 3-7 days. Massage/endermology /lymphatic drainage etc is recommended to speed up recovery and decrease lumpiness. If any signs of infection at this stage – please, let us know immediately (redness, swelling and fever significantly increased all the sudden). Sometimes you may notice numbness – it’s rare side effect, which is self resolving in few weeks. Extremely rare (we never saw it, but should let you know for medico-legal reasons) is skin necrosis – if your pain increased, skin turned black or pale – contact us immediately. 7-14 days – continue massage. Start regular skin care. You will notice that swelling is improved, bruising is also improved (if it was any). If lumps persist over 8 weeks – correction with inject-able medications will be free of charge for you. Swelling usually lasts 2 months, until full skin turn over (people with fast metabolism it’s less, with slow metabolism – it’s longer). “Bad” significant swelling noticeable to others generally lasts around 3 days (+ few more days if person is prone to fluid retention) and then mild, not noticeable swelling lasts next 6-8 weeks while the new skin regenerates.
