Vitamin D-3, one of the two most common forms of vitamin D, regulates calcium absorption in your body, so it plays a vital role in overall bone health. Vitamin D can be produced naturally by your body, or it can be consumed through your diet. As a fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin D is stored in your body fat and liver. Excess levels of vitamin D in your system can lead to an array of complications and symptoms, including weakness and fatigue.

Vitamin D Intake and Limits

Ingesting more than 4,000 international units per day can lead to vitamin D toxicity. Because your body will not overproduce vitamin D due to sunlight exposure, and because it is difficult to ingest too much vitamin D from your diet alone, consuming more than 4,000 international units of vitamin D per day is usually the result of taking too many supplements. The daily recommended amount of vitamin D for infants -- children under the age of 1 -- is 400 international units. For those between the ages of 1 and 69, the daily recommended intake is 600 international units. For those 70 and older, the daily recommended amount increases to 800 international units daily. If you're using a microgram reference, 1 microgram of vitamin D-3 equals 40 international units.

Excess Vitamin D

In the case of excessive vitamin D in your system, you run the risk of developing calcium deposits in your soft tissue, such as in your lungs and heart. You may also develop kidney stones or kidney damage. Other symptoms of vitamin D toxicity include weakness, fatigue or tiredness, vomiting, weight loss, itchy skin, constipation and muscle control issues. If you suffer from any of the following conditions, consult a doctor before beginning vitamin D supplements, as you may be at greater risk for vitamin D toxicity: high blood calcium levels, pre-existing kidney disease, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis and any type of heart condition.

Potential Medical Complications

The following medications may create potential problems with vitamin D levels in your body. Any fat absorption inhibitor, such as orlistat, may cause your body to not retain sufficient amounts of vitamin D. Vitamin D supplements may also interfere with certain high blood pressure medications that are calcium blockers, such as those containing nifedipine. Vitamin D supplements may interact poorly with digoxin, a medication used to treat irregular heart beats, as it could cause calcium levels to rise too high in your blood.
