Everyone should take a page out of Japan's book because that country is thriving. During an international comparison of recent mortality statistics among G7 countries, it was discovered that Japan had the longest average life expectancy, mainly because it has remarkably low mortality rates from ischemic heart disease and cancer (particularly breast and prostate), said Shoichiro Tsugane of the Center for Public Health Sciences, Tokyo.

The report was published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Nature.com. According to researchers, Japanese life expectancy has only increased over the years. Due to the low prevalence of obesity in Japan, the low mortality rates from ischemic heart disease and cancer are thought to be the reasons behind the longevity of Japanese people. Japanese have a low intake of red meat, specifically saturated fatty acids. They also have high intakes of fish, specifically n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, plant foods such as soybeans, and non-sugar-sweetened beverages such as green tea. A typical Japanese diet is characterised by plant food and fish. Other westernised diets such as meat, milk and dairy products are also associated with longevity in Japan.

Below are the major factors due to which Japanese men and women are able to live a long and healthy life without any complications.

1. Ikigai

According to 'ikigai', which is an ancient philosophy that preaches that one must seek some joy and purpose in life instead of merely existing, life is about having a practice that guides you towards fulfilment. This concept does not aim to provide one with instant gratification but helps in defining your purpose in life, your personal mission, and tapping into your life's full potential. According to psychologists, it leads to a sense of higher self-esteem.

2. Japanese genetics

Aside from the fact that the Japanese have good healthcare and a great diet, they also have a genetic advantage due to two genes in particular - DNA 5178 and ND2-237Met genotype. It is prevalent among the Japanese population. Even though not every Japanese will have this gene type, it is common among those with a longer lifespan. These genes enhance the lifespan by blocking age-related diseases like type 2 diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases.

4. "Hara Hach Bun Me"

This concept translates to that you should eat only until you are 80 per cent full. According to experts, it takes at least 20 minutes for the brain to get the signal from the body that it needs to stop eating. It's called the "clock and reminder to stop eating". Japanese people also serve smaller portions and have adopted a slower eating style. Portions are even served on smaller plates.

5. Clean surroundings and a good healthcare system

The Japanese are also known for their advanced health care system. They have access to things like treatment for TB for free. Japan invested in their public health system in the 1950s and 1960s and now it is paying off.

6. Dedicated mealtimes

Japanese families are very strict about their eating regime. They sit on the floor and eat with chopsticks which slows down the entire process of eating. As we mentioned before, the Japanese have a very clean and healthy diet which also leads to a lower obesity rate in the country.

7. Tea

The Japanese love their tea, and their ancient drink is rich in antioxidants that help in boosting their immune system, fight cancer, aid digestion, increase energy levels and regulate blood pressure.

8. The elderly are taken care of:

Most Japanese take care of their elderly very well, and families prefer to keep everyone together. It is very normal for grandparents to spend time with their grandchildren on a regular basis. The Japanese believe that family values brings everyone together and benefit both, young and old, members of the family.
