Read More »Mounjaro (similar to Ozempic) is self-administered into the fat tissue by a pen injector once a week. The medication can be picked up at any pharmacy that carries it–just like any other medication and it does not have to be administed by a healthcare professional.
Mounjaro belongs to a group of medications that was originally developed to treat diabetes and that act on the GLP-1 receptor in the body, similar to Ozempic/Wegovy. However, Mounjaro also activates the GIP receptor, which makes it slightly different from Ozempic/Wegovy. In the SURMUNT-1 trial, Mounjaro was found to lead to significant weight loss: A 5 mg maintenence dose of Mounjaro led to an average weight reduction of 35 pounds or 16% of body weight. A 10 mg dose led to an average of 49 pounds or 21.4% of the body weight. A 15 mg dose led to an average weight loss of 52 pounds or 22.5% of the body weight Note that not all patients tolerate the highest doses due to side effects. It is unclear if Mounjaro is truly more effective in weight loss than Ozempic, because experts note that Mounjaro is given in higher dose equivalents compared to the trials done with Ozempic/Wegovy. A healthy diet and excercise are always preferred over medications. However, when serious attempts have been made to lose weight without success, medications can be considered, and can be highly beneficial for the long-term health. Please note that these weight loss medications always need to be combined with a healthy diet and regular excercise.
Losing weight with exercises and the right diet will lead to a better balance of good and bad cholesterol levels, fight hypertension, and improve...
