What no one tells you about liposuction?

You can expect a transformation after liposuction, but it won't be instantaneous. It can take several weeks or even a few months for swelling to completely subside and reveal your new body contours. In fact, you might temporarily gain a little bit of weight after surgery due to fluid accumulation.

Liposuction continues to be one of the most popularly performed plastic surgery procedures. Yet there are some aspects of liposuction that many people are unaware of. Here, Dr. Abhay Gupta pulls back the curtain on what no one talks about when it comes to liposuction.

Not Choosing a Qualified Surgeon Could Have Serious Consequences

Selecting the right surgeon is vital to your health and safety as well as the aesthetic outcome of your procedure. To achieve the best and safest results, you must choose a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has many years of experience performing liposuction. Not vetting your surgeon could put you at risk of serious consequences, including skin infection, accumulation of fluid or deformities (e.g., wavy or bumpy skin).

After Surgery, Your Body Needs a Break

Although the techniques and technology have advanced considerably since the early days of liposuction, and recovery is faster and more comfortable than it used to be, it is still a major surgery. You must give your body a break to recover after liposuction, and limit your level of activity and range of motion while you recuperate. You can resume work within a few days of surgery, but strenuous exercise and other activities are off-limits for about a month.

Liposuction Won’t Improve the Look of Stretch Marks or Cellulite

Liposuction is effective for getting rid of fat deposits in the target area, but it will not improve the appearance of stretch marks or cellulite. Actually, liposuction can make cellulite look worse.

Results Are Not Immediate

You can expect a transformation after liposuction, but it won’t be instantaneous. It can take several weeks or even a few months for swelling to completely subside and reveal your new body contours. In fact, you might temporarily gain a little bit of weight after surgery due to fluid accumulation. But as long as you eat a healthy diet, the weight should come off quickly and you will lose inches from the procedure. If You Gain a Lot of Weight After Surgery, It Can Compromise Your Result. Once fat cells are removed during liposuction, they cannot grow back. However, if you gain a significant amount of weight after surgery, the fat can appear in new places. It’s not always possible to predict where the fat will appear, either.
