The mere fact we need to distinguish daytime drinking from regular drinking let's you know it's a little bit naughty. But there's nothing wrong with canceling everything and just deciding to start boozing at noon. (Or, even better, beforenoon.) You see, day drinking is the activity. Especially on summer weekends when it's nice outside. Of course, not everything is a day drink. You probably shouldn't start swigging Old-Fashioneds or Rusty Nails at 2 PM unless you're super hardcore...or have no interest in seeing the sun set. Instead, try one of these options instead. Do people still drink these? I don't know. But it's got OJ and tequila and literally a reference to the start of the day in its name. You could do worse...although, I guess for the sake of this list you actually can't. Let's be honest, spending all day drinking from a flute is only acceptable if you're a "lady who lunches" (incidentally, my dream job). Also: the fact these similar cocktails are pretty much only served in "bottomless" form is convenient for large-scale consumption, a negative for overriding quality. A light and refreshing mix of gin, grenadine...and egg white. By the time you've had enough to, well, be drunk, you've also eaten an entire omelet. An egg white omelet no less. Healthy! I was the rare child who never really liked milk. Perhaps that's because no one told me you could add bourbon, vanilla extract, and a few shakes of nutmeg to it. Caveat emptor: the lactose-heavy milk punch can quickly become a gut punch around, oh, drink four or so. Mint Juleps are undeniably delicious, an intoxicating blend of bourbon, sugar, and mint atop a heaping pile of pebble ice. The one problem is, if it's not Kentucky Derby day and/or you aren't wearing seersucker, a silver cup of Julep looks totally out of place. Then again, so does someone wasted at 4 PM on a Monday, so go for it. Who was Tom Collins? Who cares. He was probably a guy who eschewed going to museums or window-shopping with his wife on Saturday afternoons to get plowed instead. And his eponymous drink of Old Tom gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and club soda is perfect for doing nothing more rigorous than that. No one would dispute that an Arnold Palmer (half iced-tea/half lemonade) is perfect for the daytime. Add vodka to it—a sweet tea vodka like this slightly-caffeinated one from Deep Eddy if possible—and it's even better. Next thing you know, you're doing this. I'm not sure if Piña Coladas are actually perfect for day drinking—I mean, they are loaded with heavy ingredients like coconut cream—but you sure as hell can't drink them once night falls. So…ipso facto, they are day drinks I guess.

I'll be honest, I've never really loved Bloodies, certainly not for marathon day-drinking sessions. They always taste like someone added Smirnoff to my salsa. The gimmicky new breed of ones loaded with ostentatious garnishes are even worse. If I wanted to bilk the bar out of free celery sticks, I'd just order some Buffalo wings. The Brown Derby isn't exactly famous as a day-drinking cocktail, mainly because it's not a famous cocktail period. It should be, though, as it's a delightful mix of bourbon, honey syrup, and fresh grapefruit juice (and your bartender will definitely have to use an iPhone app to know that.) If you're day-drinking in the Cape this summer, a Dark 'n' Stormy is about as perfect as it gets. If you're like the rest of us and don't exactly "summer" in the summer, it's still a good option for tossing back in a public park or on your porch. You may not own any Top-Siders, but by nighttime you'll still be Slurring 'n' Slobbering.

Cool, it's like a Negroni except without the most alcoholic ingredient (gin). That's a good thing I suppose and, somehow, Campari, sweet vermouth, and club soda make for a tasty and highly-drinkable mix. USA! USA! US—oh, wait, it was invented in Italy?

8. Fernet & Coke

Not exactly complex, the way I see it, the digestif Fernet-Branca will keep your stomach settled as you drink all day, the Coke will give you the superhuman ability to drink all day. Win-win. And damn good too. I'm a dumb American so I always gets these two cocktails confused and my inability to correctly pronounce the second means I'm often too scared to order it. I shouldn't be as sugar, lime, and insert-sugarcane-alcoholis always a delicious day-drinking combination. Muddle some mint and it's even better. The Classics, both common and forgotten: The Bloody Mary, Brown Derby, and Mojito. Media Platforms Design Team Any drink that comes served in pitchers is perfect for day-drinking. Because there's nothing that'll make you realize you're not a day-drinker but perhaps a "day-drunkard" more than visiting the bar for your sixth round before it's even 1 PM. The pitcher solves that issue and the booze-soaked fresh fruit is an added bonus. The gin & tonic is so simple, yet so versatile. You can use high-end gins like Hendrick's or Koval. You can also use high-end tonics (yes, those exist) like Fever-Tree. Or you could just slum it with well gin and the soda gun. However you like yours, it's insanely refreshing, and a perfect bridge from day-drinking into night-drinking.

Even more so than the G&T, Margaritas have the widest berth between quality and crap. But, I must admit, I find them all damn tasty. Whether we're talking artisanally-prepared ones using Añejo tequilas and paprika-salt-rimmed glasses; or frozen offerings that come out of a Slurpee-like contraption behind the bar. I can drink them all day...and sometimes I do. Vodka is perhaps the quintessential day-drinking spirit, especially if you don't want anyone else to know you've been day-drinking. Because that's the thing, vodka is odorless and pretty flavorless. But day-drinking isn't about quotidian tippling, it's about having fun. So adding a hefty pour of ginger beer, some lime juice, and a dope copper mug to your vodka transforms your dipsomania into an actual weekend event.

2. Aperol Spritz

Delicious, refreshing, and fairly low in alcohol, a Spritz is simply Aperol (or another bitter liqueur like Campari) with Prosecco and a splash of soda. It'll take a lot of these to get you "spritz-faced," and that's a good thing when you're drinking all day. For my money, the Pimm's Cup is the absolute best day-drinking cocktail. Yes, it's a bit old-fashioned—and a lot British—but it's also perfect for day-drinking, especially in summer. So long as you have a bottle of the gin-based liqueur Pimm's No. 1, it's not too hard to put this puppy together. A tall glass of ice is crucial, something citrusy and carbonated is necessary (i.e lemon soda or ginger ale), then just top with plenty of chopped fresh fruits (cucumbers, oranges, lemons, strawberries...go nuts) and a mint garnish. Now call in sick to work for the rest of the summer, and whip up another. Aaron Goldfarb Aaron Goldfarb lives in Brooklyn and is a novelist and the author of 'Hacking Whiskey.'
