Read More »No matter what its age, the body never loses its need for protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and, yes, even a bit of fat. Meeting those needs poses different challenges at each stage of life. Following the Food Guide Pyramid with its five food groups and suggested portion sizes should provide the necessary nutrients, says Amy Wadell, chief clinical dietitian at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. The number of calories a body requires depends on how physically active the person is and, to a degree, the age. By the time people reach adulthood, their calorie needs begin to decline, writes registered dietitian Roberta Larson Duyff in "The American Dietetic Association's Complete Food and Nutrition Guide" (Chronimed, $29.95). Duyff suggests the "rule of 10" to estimate the base number of calories an adult needs. The rule assumes 10 calories per pound of body weight to fuel the body's normal daily functions. An active adult -- one who exercises daily or at least regularly -- can take in more calories. But for older or less active people, "the biggest challenge is getting those nutrients in fewer calories," says Wadell. These folks "need to eat more nutrient-dense foods and try not to overeat because the [calorie] needs tend to be less." Because muscle mass decreases and metabolism slows with age, a 65-year-old person needs fewer calories to fuel the body than he or she did at age 25 -- unless the level of physical activity hasn't changed. Duyff explains that "for every decade [in adulthood], energy needs drop by about 2 percent." A 20-year-old woman who eats 2,500 calories a day will require only 2,306 calories at age 60. That assumes that this woman's activity levels have stayed the same through the decades. A woman who was physically active in her 20s, 30s and 40s but has slowed down or stopped exercising in her later years will need even fewer calories to avoid gaining weight.

Wadell says that the National Institutes of Health recommends 1,000 to 1,500 milligrams of calcium a day after age 65. "That's three to four cups [of milk] a day, although there are other ways to get calcium -- salmon with bones, dark green leafy vegetables or cereals, orange juice and waffles now fortified with calcium." The vitamin C in orange juice and other fruits, tomatoes and potatoes helps the body to absorb iron in foods. Lack of iron can cause anemia over a long period of time. Fruits and vegetables are important at any age because they are packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber in a low-calorie form. Canned (in juice or water) and frozen fruits and vegetables have keeping qualities appealing to the single cook who shops once a week. When buying fresh produce, buy what you know you can eat to avoid waste, Wadell says. Although some fat in the diet is a necessity, too much piles on the calories and clogs the arteries. Nonstick sprays are helpful in cooking, and a soft-tub or light margarine can be used sparingly as a spread. If you're going to use oil, make it olive or canola, Wadell says.
