What is Dosirak? - Guide to Korean Packed Lunch

Lunches differ around the world – in the UK you may be used to a ham and cheese sandwich, while Japan is home to the bento box. In Korea, the lunch concept is similar to a bento box, but with a definite Korean twist on this to-go dinner. Korean packed lunches are known as Dosirak and typically consist of an assortment of traditional side dishes and rice. Here we take a look at some of the items you could pack into a Korean lunch.

What is a Dosirak?

Dosirak is both the name of the lunchbox and the food that is served within it in South Korea. A dosirak lunchbox will typically be made from thermo-steel or plastic. They can be a simple box or contain compartments and tiers. Often, these lunchboxes will be filled at home and enjoyed as lunch at work, school or on a picnic. Some supermarkets and train stations will also sell their own version of a dosirak.

Dosirak Lunch Components

Rice – boiled rice

How is Dosirak Served and Eaten?

The dosirak lunchbox will be filled with rice and an assortment of side dish components. Unless the lunchbox is separated by compartments, most will shake the lunch box up before eating, so that all of the elements are mixed together as one delicious meal! Gout-friendly food sources

Foods that contain low levels of purine makes for a gout-friendly diet.

White bread, pasta and noodles

Refined carbohydrates are safe to eat for gout sufferers because they have a low purine content. But too much consumption of refined carbohydrates can cause a rapid rise in blood sugar and increase one’s risk of developing metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Whole grain breads and whole grain pasta are healthier than refined carbohydrates, but since they contain moderate amounts of purine, they should be eaten occasionally.

Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt)

Low-fat milk and low-fat yogurt are excellent foods for gout sufferers because of their low purine content and ability to lower gout risk.

Vegetables

Eat plenty of vegetables such as kailan, cabbage, squash, red bell pepper, beetroot, but limit the intake of vegetables with moderate purine content such as asparagus, spinach, cauliflower and mushrooms.

Fruits

Eat fruits high in vitamin C such as oranges, tangerines, papaya and cherries. Apples, pears, pineapples, avocados are low-purine fruits and therefore can be eaten in moderation.

Water

Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day unless you are advised to restrict your fluid intake due to medical reasons.

Coffee and tea

Coffee and tea are safe for gout sufferers.
