Coffee, tea, soda, juice, sports drinks, energy drinks, sparkling water—there are so many choices out there when it comes to picking your drink! So what’s the best choice for a person with diabetes? Just like everyone else, the best choice for staying hydrated is always WATER!

Think outside the bottle

Infused water: Adding a few pieces of fresh fruit and/or herbs to your water can give it a hint of flavor without adding any sugar or calories. Get creative with fruit and herb combinations like blackberry and mint, watermelon and basil, or lavender and lemon. Or try something with a little kick like apples and cinnamon, peaches and ginger, or strawberry and jalapeno. (Most of the time adding fruit to water will not add any sugar or calories, unless you mash the fruit or eat the fruit after it has infused.) Sparkling water: Sparkling water is a great change from sugary sodas when you are craving something bubbly. If plain sparkling water isn’t your cup of tea, you can infuse it just like plain water, or try any of the new flavored sparkling water options available in stores. Look for brands and flavors that have no added sugar or sweeteners, like La Croix. Tea: If you think about it, tea is basically just infused water! Leave out the sugar, and tea is another great zero-calorie drink choice that can be enjoyed hot or cold. If you are sensitive to caffeine, look for decaf versions of black and green tea, or try a caffeine-free herbal tea like chamomile, rooibos, or peppermint. If you drink bottled tea, check the ingredients and look for options that have no added sugar or sweeteners. Coffee: Just like tea, plain black coffee has no calories or sugar. However, flavored coffees like lattes and many bottled coffees have lots of added milk and sugar. This can lead to a drink surprisingly high in calories and carbohydrates. Check the nutrition facts label on bottled coffee, and opt for plain coffee without any milk or sugar at the coffee shop.

Drink These in Moderation

*While fruit juice isn’t a great choice for hydration, it can be helpful for treating low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) since it can quickly raise blood sugar. Milk: Milk is a great source of nutrients like protein, calcium, and vitamin D, which are important to promote bone strength. But milk also contains calories, carbohydrates, and sometimes saturated fat. Choose low- or nonfat milk without added flavor or sugar. If you prefer non-dairy milks, like soy or almond, look for unsweetened varieties. The recommended serving size for milk is 8 ounces—this contains 12 grams of carb, about 100 calories, and about a third of the calcium you need in a day.

Avoid these

Diet drinks are a better choice than sugary drinks like soda, but should still be consumed in moderation

Does cranberry flush liver?

Cranberry juice is well-known for its kidney benefits, but it is also helpful with cleansing the liver. In 2007, an animal study was published in the “Journal of Medicinal Food” in which scientists found the animals' triglyceride levels were lower when they regularly consumed cranberry juice.

Your liver filters out toxins from your blood, stores fuel for your body and produces bile, which helps with digestion. Drinking fruit and vegetable juices good for your liver can provide nutrient support for the organ and encourage it to function more efficiently, eliminating toxins from your system.

Benefits of Hydration

All fruit and vegetable juices consist primarily of water, which is one of the best drinks available for flushing and cleansing the liver. Your liver uses water to metabolize fats, and insufficient hydration will put stress on your liver. While there is no exact water requirement, experts recommend between six and eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day to keep your body hydrated. You may need more if the weather is hot or humid or if you are engaging in strenuous activity.

Beet Juice Benefits

Fresh beet juice is sweet-tasting and contains polyphenols, natural antioxidants that help reduce the risk of cell death and damage as a result of exposure to toxins. “Nutrition” published a study in 2007 in which scientists found that the polyphenols in beets boosted the liver’s natural antioxidant function and reduced the effects of oxidative stress on the liver. While promising, this animal study indicates that further research is required, particularly on humans.

Antioxidant-Rich Blueberry Juice

Rich in antioxidants, blueberry juice boosts your liver function and reduces the risk of scarring. “PLoS One” published a study in 2013 in which scientists found that fresh blueberry juice fed to rats reduced the levels of oxidative stress experienced by the liver, as well as reducing collagen buildup in the organ, which causes scarring. Further research on blueberry juice’s effects on humans is still needed.
