Should I wash my hair with cold or hot water?

Rinsing with hot water results in taking away essential oils and moisture from your hair. This can leave your scalp dehydrated and hair frizzy and static. Cold water seals the moisture in the hair, which leaves the scalp hydrated. It also closes the pores, preventing dirt and excessive oil from entering the scalp.

Hair care requires effort and one needs to take care of the smallest of the details. Everything, from deciding the right product to use to setting the right temperature of water, is important. On one hand, cold water is claimed to be the ideal temperature for a hair wash by many and on the other hand, hot water is, supposedly, better for cleansing hair. So let's dig a little deeper to sort out this confusion once and for all.

Effect Of Hot Water On Hair:

1. It opens pores and cleanses thoroughly

The steam of the hot water acts like a sauna and helps the pores open up. The open pores allow the scalp to absorb moisture and natural oils which are good for hair growth. Hot water also helps get rid of any dirt or excess oil accumulated in the hair.

2. It can make hair dry and frizzy

Rinsing with hot water results in taking away essential oils and moisture from your hair. This can leave your scalp dehydrated and hair frizzy and static.

Effects Of Cold Water On Hair:

1. It seals moisture

Cold water seals the moisture in the hair, which leaves the scalp hydrated. It also closes the pores, preventing dirt and excessive oil from entering the scalp. Open pores prove to be much more vulnerable to pollution, grease, and oil than closed pores.

2. It reduces hair volume

Cold water tends to traps moisture in our hair and doesn't let it leave. As a result of excess moisture, your hair can also look flat, with no volume. This brings us to the perfect way to wash your hair which uses both cold and hot water. Step 1: Start with warm water. Massage your scalp with your favorite shampoo and get the excess dirt and oil out of your hair. (Make sure the water is not too hot but more lukewarm - we don't want you to burn your skin!) Step 2: Rinse out the shampoo with the same lukewarm water and apply conditioner. Step 3: Wash off the conditioner with cold water and let it seal your pores. All that's left to do? Flip your hair while people fawn over it.

How do I know if my hair needs water?

How can I tell if my post-vacation hair needs hydration

or moisture?

Stephan from the Leonor Greyl Institute addresses this issue,

which many women face every day.

How to recognize a dehydrated hair?

“You can tell when hair is dehydrated because it’s porous: it puffs up in humid weather,

gets frizzy and looks dull.

Every hair type needs hydration to keep the hair’s cuticle smooth.

With a water-based formula, Tonique Hydratant is the hydrophilic product par excellence.

Styling products such as Sérum de Soie Sublimateur or Condition Naturelle can also

work well.

And for very dry hair, nothing beats Crème aux Fleurs, a washing cream left

in for 10 to 20 minutes before rinsing.

Moisturize thicker hair

Hair that is very thick, brittle, with split ends needs a richer, oil-based product.

But remember that water is still essential for carrying moisturizing agents,

so very damaged hair needs to be hydrated before it is moisturized.

For this, I spray some Tonique Hydratant and wait for a few seconds for the hair to absorb the product, then I apply Huile de Leonor Greyl or a deep repairing

treatment left in for up to 20 minutes.

Éclat Naturel styling cream is a great finishing touch, as it gives hair all the nutrients

it needs from root to tip.

Generally speaking, thick hair needs more deep moisturizing treatments than finer hair,

which can be weighed down by rich products and prefers regular hydration instead.” Visit your stylist regularly for advice and to remove any tips that are too damaged to be treated — the last resort for getting rid of split ends and brittle hair!
