Here’s some detail on certain side effects this drug may cause.

Risk of thyroid cancer

Wegovy may cause thyroid cancer. In fact, Wegovy has a boxed warning for this risk. A boxed warning is the most serious warning from the FDA. It alerts doctors and patients about drug effects that may be dangerous. Animal studies found an increased risk of thyroid cancer in rats that were given Wegovy. But animal studies don’t always predict what will happen in humans. It isn’t known for sure if Wegovy increases the risk of thyroid cancer in humans. If you or a family member have a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), you shouldn’t use Wegovy. MTC is a rare type of thyroid cancer. You also shouldn’t use Wegovy if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2). MEN2 is a rare genetic (inherited) condition that can cause thyroid cancer.

Symptoms of thyroid cancer can include:

Tell your doctor right away if you have any symptoms of thyroid cancer. They can advise on the cause of these symptoms and recommend treatment options for your condition.

Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) is a rare but serious side effect of Wegovy. To find out how often this side effect occurred in clinical studies, see the drug’s prescribing information.

Symptoms of pancreatitis can include:

pain in the center of the abdomen (belly), which may get worse after eating

nausea or vomiting

diarrhea

loss of appetite

jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)

Tell your doctor right away if you have symptoms of pancreatitis while taking Wegovy. They’ll check you for this condition. If you have pancreatitis, they’ll likely prescribe a drug other than Wegovy for you.

Gallbladder problems

Gallbladder problems, such as gallstones (lumps in the gallbladder), are a rare but serious side effect of Wegovy. To find out how often these side effects occurred in clinical studies, see the drug’s prescribing information.

Symptoms of gallstones may include:

abdominal (belly) pain

jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)

If you have symptoms of gallbladder problems while taking Wegovy, talk with your doctor. They’ll give you tests to check for this condition. Your doctor can advise if it’s safe for you to keep taking Wegovy.
