If you have vomited, you may feel better if you lie down and: Have nothing to eat or drink for 2 hours after last episode of vomiting. Rinse your mouth and spit only. Then begin hydrating yourself by sipping 1-2 tablespoons of clear liquids every 10-15 minutes for 2 hours. Clear liquids include: water, herbal tea, broth, Gatorade (or other non-caffeinated sports drinks), soda (7-Up, Sprite, Sierra Mist or other clear soda or ginger ale) that has been stirred to reduce the carbonation Jell-O or Popsicles are acceptable if tolerated, but avoid orange or red colored choices

Once tolerated for 6-8 hours, the following bland foods may be added:

Crackers or bread

Jell-O

Toast without butter

Applesauce

Cream of wheat without dairy

Broth-based soup (chicken noodle, chicken rice)

Cream of rice without dairy

Hard-cooked eggs

Plain white rice

Broiled or baked chicken or turkey

Plain baked or mashed potatoes

Broiled or baked fish

Sorbets or fruit ices without pulp

Bananas

If you are having diarrhea, AVOID these foods until 24 hours after the last loose stool:

Dairy products: milk, cheese, yogurt, kefir, etc.

Spicy foods

Fried or greasy foods

Fruits or vegetables (except bananas)

For vomiting or diarrhea, AVOID these for several days after your last symptoms:

Alcohol consumption

Caffeinated beverages (including coffee, colas, energy drinks, caffeinated tea, etc.)

Tobacco use (including smoking or chewing)

Vomiting should subside after several hours. Diarrhea should improve over a period of one to two days. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for fever and aches and Dramamine for nausea according to over-the≠counter directions are usually well-tolerated

SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION PROMPTLY IF:

Diarrhea or vomiting persists more than 24 hours, bloody stools/vomiting blood develop, severe abdominal pain, or fever greater than 100 degrees F. Call 847-491-8100 and ask to speak to the on-call nurse (or the on-call doctor after the office is closed)
