Is your hair unruly? Do you feel like your scalp could treat you a little better? Are your locks dry and brittle? Have you been told to wash your hair every other day or even a few times a week to fix all these hair probs? Does haircare confuse you? Yeah. We feel. That’s why we created a blog post all about washing your hair!

Probably one of the most common questions about haircare: Should I wash my hair every day?

Let’s just say that the answer isn’t a definite yes or no. But before you click out, just know that your hair washing routine depends tremendously on your scalp/hair, your environment, lifestyle, and more! But don’t feel overwhelmed because we’ll walk you through it all! Growing up in the states, it’s pretty common to hear hairstylists say that you should skip washes because it dries out and damages your hair. To an extent that is true, but mainly you want to focus on your hair and not the hair of the person next to you in the hair salon, or the hair of a celebrity.

American vs. Korean Haircare

There are a few of us in FaceTory who grew up with American hair products, and once we started trying Korean hair products… let’s just say we jumped for joy ‘cause our hair was no longer the mess it used to be! That got us thinking that there are a few major differences between American hair products and Korean hair products. So, let’s dive into that real quick. In Korea, people like to wash their hair every day because of environmental pollution (fine dust, gas emissions, etc). Whereas people in America generally tend to wash hair every 2-3 days due to the common perception that it’s much healthier for your hair. Because of that, a lot of products in the market tend to actually be harsher to ensure that build-up is removed. But harsher products can irritate your scalp. Not exactly saying that Korean haircare is superior but we’re all about being gentle with the skin! And Korean haircare products do just that because it’s developed for the majority of people there who wash their hair every day.

Before we delve into the washing routines, think about these things first:

Think about your hair situation:

1. Does your scalp get oily easily?

2. Is your scalp dry?

3. How does your hair feel? Dry? Brittle? Strong? Thick? Thin?

4. Has your hair been or currently is dyed/processed/bleached?

5. Do you heat style often?

All these things should be considered when you’re thinking about your hair washing routine.

1. Do you live in a city where air pollution is terrible?

2. Do you workout often?

Your lifestyle and environment also play a major role in how often you wash your hair. If you tend to live in a city where air pollution is terrible, you may want to wash your hair every day. Smoke, air pollutants can affect hair and scalp health and it’s always best to wash your hair every day. If you live in the alps or places where air pollution is minimal, you can get away with not washing your hair for 2-3 days.

Recommendations:

Now for the routine recommendations. Before we begin, please make sure to adjust to your hair type and what you know works best for your hair! If you’re unsure then now is the time to experiment and have fun testing different routines and products to see what works! Try to think of your hair as not only your hair but as the scalp as well! Hair is technically already dead once it comes out from the root. That’s why it’s extremely important to put moisture and nourish your hair after washing! So we definitely recommend treating your hair with natural oils, hair packs, and/or hair serum. Whatever floats your boat.

Now, let’s focus on the scalp:

Dry scalp and thin hair: Wash hair every 2-3 days depending on oil accumulation on scalp. Try to incorporate more moisturizing hair products such as serums and treatment packs to keep hair moisturized. Oil cleansing for your scalp can also help. Cleanse with Jojoba oil every other day to remove impurities and dirt from your follicles. Oily scalp: Wash hair every day to keep scalp and follicles clean. Use shampoos that do not contain sulfates and silicones. Sulfates can strip your hair of moisture, leading to verrry damaged hair. Some Silicones may block pores and make hair even oilier. There are also some that are hydrophobic, making it difficult to wash off and causing hair to feel greasy over time. Hair tonics are great for this hair type as they help calm the scalp while keeping it clean!

Dandruff : wash daily with products with salicylic acid or Zinc Pyrithione

Irritated scalp: Wash daily with sulfate-free and calming products.

Whew! That was a lot of info but we hope that helped! Don't forget to take care of your hair the same way you want to take care of your skin! Thanks for reading and as always, just keep glowing!

Love,
