Water not only quenches your thirst, but it also plays a crucial role in your health. Making up about 60 percent of your body weight, water helps regulate body temperature, lubricate and cushion joints, protect your spinal cord and rid the body of wastes by facilitating urination, sweat and bowel movements. Water may also play a role in appetite control and therefore help you lose weight if you drink it at the right times. Before bed may not be the best time to guzzle a glass, however.

Water and Weight Loss

Although water has no special weight-loss properties, it does help fill up your stomach, which might curb your appetite and help you control your calorie intake to shed pounds. Research published in Australian Family Physician in 2013 found that study participants who drank two 8-ounce glasses of water before lost more weight over time than dieters that didn't pre-load each meal with water.

Drinking Water at Bedtime

You can drink a glass of water at any time of day to control your calorie intake. The Ask Dr. Sears website recommends drinking plenty of water throughout the day to suppress cravings for unhealthy, high-calorie foods. If you tend to crave unhealthy foods, such as cookies or ice cream, at bedtime, you might want to gulp down a glass of water until the craving subsides and you can drift off to sleep.

Downsides of Drinking Before Bed

For some people, drinking a lot of fluids before bedtime can disrupt a good night's sleep. Depending on your body, you may find that drinking water before bed time causes you to wake up at least once -- or more frequently -- during the night to empty your bladder. If this is an issue for you, you shouldn't drink water before bed. Regularly getting poor sleep can be detrimental to your health and cause you to gain weight. Stop drinking water a few hours before bedtime so you have time to empty your bladder before hitting the sack.

Despite insufficient research to support its benefits, the goal of colon cleansing is to clear the colon of any stagnant, supposedly toxic waste encrusted on the walls of the large intestine. A colon cleanse is the act of flushing out or cleaning the large intestine . They may be performed by professionals called colonic hygienists.

What is colon cleansing?

Colon cleansing dates back to ancient times. It's recently become popular. But is it safe for you?

Your colon is also known as your large intestine or large bowel. Part of your digestive system, it breaks down food and moves waste to your rectum. Colon cleansing is usually done to prepare for medical procedures such as a colonoscopy. But some alternative medicine practitioners say that colon cleansing can detoxify your body. Colon cleansing can be done using colon-cleansing products or colonic irrigation (colonic hydrotherapy). In colonic irrigation, up to 60 liters of fluid is pumped through your rectum via a tube. This is repeated several times. This is not like an enema, which runs a much smaller amount of fluid one time into your colon. A colon cleanse is also not the same as a colonoscopy. During a colonoscopy, your doctor examines your colon to check for abnormalities, and screens for colon cancer. A long, flexible tube called a colonoscope is inserted into your rectum. This contains a tiny camera so your doctor can see the inside of your colon.
