Tummy Tucks & Clothing Size

The motivations for a tummy tuck procedure can vary, although most patients share the motivation of wanting to achieve a slimmer abdominal region. The results from your tummy tuck can be easily viewed in the mirror, but many patients also want the confirmation of a smaller figure through a decrease in clothing size. Below, we’ll explore the effects that a tummy tuck can have on your clothing size, and why this number might not matter as much as you think. A tummy tuck inevitably decreases the size of the body by eliminating excess fat and skin from the abdominal region. Generally, patients lose about one or two sizes on their clothing following a tummy tuck procedure. However, the unique changes in each patient’s body makes it difficult to predict the exact effects that a tummy tuck will have on your size.

The Problem with Clothing Size

Although the change in the size of your clothing can be a reassuring indicator of your enhanced figure, it might not be as accurate a measurement as you’d think. First, clothing manufacturers use a number of different size guides and measurements. What would be a size 6 from one manufacturer might actually be a size 10 elsewhere. Since clothing sizes aren’t constant, it will be difficult for a change in clothing size to be an accurate representation of changes in your figure.

Wearing Your Results

Some patients may see no change in clothing size, or even an increase in clothing size following their treatment. Before you get concerned, consider how you are wearing your clothing. Many people wear their clothes differently in order to hide fat or the contours of the body. Patients who undergo a tummy tuck often have the confidence to wear clothing that fits their body more snugly, accentuating the enhanced contours of the body. For some, this might result in a change in size that you did not expect. It’s important to notice and appreciate the improved fit of your clothes and the flat contours of the body, as these reveal much more about your new figure than a clothing size will.
