You may feel as though you can't shed the weight too quickly, but despite what you see on reality television, faster isn't always better. For safe and sustainable weight loss, aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds each week, taking approximately four to eight months to lose 35 pounds. Achieve this with a combination of diet and exercise. Stress reduction may also help by combating anxiety-related binges and lowering levels of cortisol, an anxiety-induced hormone that signals your body to store abdominal fat.

Crash Diet Dangers

You could potentially drop the weight in a couple of months on a crash diet, but that's no way to obtain lasting results -- plus, you might harm your health. Severe calorie restriction leads to muscle and water loss and propels your body into starvation mode, which slows metabolism. When you start eating normally again, the weight will come right back. Aside from the short-lived results, fad diets rob your body of vital nutrients and encourage food cravings.

Healthy Eating

Rather than reaching for diet foods that may be nutrient-poor, plan your meals around nutritious, low-calorie ingredients. Fill half of your plate with fresh or steamed fruits and vegetables, and the other half with whole grains such as corn tortillas, whole-wheat bread and rice and lean proteins such as tofu, beans, fish, light meat poultry and low-fat cheese. Avoid fried foods, and get your fats from nuts, avocados, canola oil and other plant sources. Drink water throughout the day to stave off hunger -- it's easy to mistake thirst for hunger.

Counting Calories

With healthy food choices and smaller portions, it may not be necessary to count calories. However, tracking energy in versus energy out is an excellent way to calculate how long it will take to lose the weight. A pound of fat is equal to 3,500 calories. Therefore, you can lose a pound or two a week by eating 500 to 1,000 fewer calories than you burn every day. Dipping below 1,200 daily calories can lead to malnourishment, however, so don't attempt such restriction without a doctor's approval.
