A number of factors can contribute to the development of excess fat in the upper pubic area. In many cases, the condition is simply a result of genetic predisposition. Weight gain and loss are also often responsible for the pockets of fat and loose skin associated with this condition.

A popular topic of interest lately, especially in women’s magazines like COSMOPOLITAN, the FUPA is a condition that can be quite embarrassing for individuals experiencing the symptoms. Though “FUPA” has developed a number of slang and indelicate meanings, it actually stands for “fatty upper pubic area,” and describes an excess of fatty tissue or loose skin located on or directly above the mons pubis—the region that develops hair during puberty. While often inconspicuous in regular clothing, a FUPA can make wearing swimwear or fitness clothing, as well as engaging in intimate activities, a stressful, unpleasant experience for many. Our experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Charles Perry, recognizes the delicate nature of this perceived issue, and he strives to provide a comprehensive resource on the causes of and available treatments for this concern. A number of factors can contribute to the development of excess fat in the upper pubic area. In many cases, the condition is simply a result of genetic predisposition. Weight gain and loss are also often responsible for the pockets of fat and loose skin associated with this condition. It is commonly developed in women after having children, as weight gain and muscle laxity predominantly occur in and around this region. Another potential cause is diet. Inflammatory foods and processed meals, such as alcohol, high fructose corn syrup, and fast food with high sodium content, may increase fatty deposits and bloating. Stress, too, can play a part in storing fat in this location. As there are many causes, there are also multiple treatments for this condition. Diet, exercise, stress relieving activities, and surgical procedures, including monsplasty and abdominoplasty, are all available to help treat this common condition. For more information on effective therapies to help correct excess fat in the upper pubic area, please check back next week for our article on FUPA treatment. Risk Factors for Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Your body doesn’t produce B12 on its own; you have to get it through food or supplements. Men should aim to get 2.4 micrograms per day; that’s about the amount in a 3-ounce serving of ground beef or salmon. In the United States, between 3 to 6 % of the population are vitamin B12 deficient and up to 20% have marginally depleted levels (3).
