The plank is a static exercise, which consists of maintaining a difficult position, tensing the torso in a horizontal position, for a long period of time. It's one of the most popular exercises to burn belly fat, but does it actually give you the results you're looking for?

Although it may seem that this exercise focuses on the abdominal area, the truth is that it is an exercise that, despite keeping you in the same position, is very complete and more complex that you would normally think. Various muscle groups are used in it, such as the muscles of the back, the biceps and triceps of the arms, the glutes, the abdominals, the deltoids of the shoulders and the quadriceps of the legs, among others. Belinda Howell, a personal trainer who regularly consulted by 'Pop Sugar', has decided to answer the eternal question: "The truth is that exercising my abs is one of the things I like the most. Maybe it's because of vanity, and a lot of it. People have already asked me: does planking work to burn abdominal fat? And, the truth is... it's not the best exercise."

Can plank exercises really burn my belly fat?

The truth is that no single exercise will help you burn belly fat. "If you're really worried about reducing it," says Howell, "and it's quite complicated, I recommend that you focus on movements that require more energy and are compound. For example, squats and push-ups, because you will work several groups of muscles at the same time. It will not only help you lose belly fat, but build every muscle, which I find much better." However, if you still want to do planks in the gym and you don't have the opportunity for a trainer to observe you and help you do them correctly, you may be doing them wrong. If you want to work on your abs, don't hurt your back in the process. Remember to put your feet approximately at hip height, your elbows just below your shoulders at a 90º angle and your hands at the same height and, most importantly, you must tighten your abdominal area and keep your back straight. Repetitions should last between 15 and 30 seconds. Also make sure that your shoulders, lower back and buttocks are in a straight line and parallel to the floor.

If you drink three or more cups of tea a day you might be doing your health more good than drinking plain water, say researchers from King’s College, London, UK. This new study found, among other things, that the urban myth that tea dehydrates could not be further from the truth – tea hydrates as well as water does, say the researchers. You can read about this new study in the The European Journal of Clinical Nutrition . Not only will tea rehydrate you, it may also protect you from developing heart disease, and even cancer. Apparently, three or more cups a day may also protect your teeth and strengthen your bones. The researchers say they are not sure why, but believe that flavonoids, polyphenol antioxidants, which are found in abundance in tea, may play a major role. Flavonoids help prevent cell damage. Team leader, Dr Carrie Ruxton, a Public Health Nutritionist, said tea is better for you than water because all water does is rehydrate you. Tea rehydrates you and provides antioxidants. With tea you get two benefits.

Dr. Ruxton, in a BBC interview, said “Studies on caffeine have found very high doses dehydrate and everyone assumes that caffeine-containing beverages dehydrate. But even if you had a really, really strong cup of tea or coffee, which is quite hard to make, you would still have a net gain of fluid. Also, a cup of tea contains fluoride, which is good for the teeth.?

The team found that people are drinking less tea in the UK than they used to – possibly because they are consuming more soft drinks. The biggest tea drinkers in the UK are over 40 years old.
