Creating a calorie deficit through diet and exercise is the tried and true way to burn fat.

The Bromelain Fat-Burning Myth

Perusing the diet section of your local health food store, you might notice bottles of digestive enzymes under the fat-burning sign. Digestive enzymes -- whether found in food or the ones naturally made by your body -- assist in breaking down food into smaller parts to ease digestion. There's a mixture of enzymes in pineapple called bromelain. However, bromelain doesn’t assist in breaking down fat; instead, it helps digest protein. In fact, if you’ve ever gotten mouth burn after eating a bowl of fresh pineapple, you’ve experienced the enzymatic power of bromelain. Not to say that bromelain doesn’t offer some health benefits though. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, there’s evidence that bromelain helps ease nasal congestion and inflammation, but there’s no evidence it can help with weight loss.

How You Burn Fat

Whether it’s Atkins, Keto or some other trendy weight-loss diet, they all work in the same way. They help you burn fat by cutting calories and affecting your metabolism. The key to weight loss is to create a calorie deficit so your body burns your fat, and sometimes muscle, for the energy it’s no longer getting from food. In addition to cutting calories, you can also create a calorie deficit by increasing activity through exercise, whether it’s going to spin class three nights a week or making it a point to always take the stairs instead of the elevator. While pineapple alone can’t melt your fat away, as a low-calorie food that’s rich in nutrients, it makes a healthy addition to any weight loss diet. One cup of fresh pineapple is fat free and has 80 calories, 22 grams of carbs, 1 gram of protein and 2 grams of fiber. It also meets more than 100 percent of your daily vitamin C needs. When following a low-calorie diet, it’s important to include foods rich in nutrients that support overall good health like pineapple. Pineapple has low energy density, which means it has few calories compared to serving size. It's also a good source of fiber, so pineapple helps fill you up to keep hunger pangs away.

Cherries and cherry juice contain high levels of melatonin, a hormone in the brain that controls your sleep regulation. One study even shows that drinking tart cherry juice could improve sleep in people who suffer from insomnia. Conducted by Louisiana State University, the study found that adults who consumed just 8 ounces of tart cherry juice two times a day slept for an additional 85 minutes.

Berries

Berries -- including blueberries, raspberries and blackberries -- contain very high levels of antioxidants. According to experts at the National Sleep Foundation, antioxidants can protect you from the stress of a sleep disorder, which can cause oxidation in the body. Consuming antioxidant-rich berries before bed can help reduce your overall physical stress, thereby allowing you to have a more restful sleep. Another fruity treat to enjoy before bed is the humble pineapple. Also high in melatonin, researchers discovered that after eating pineapple, the melatonin markers in the body could increase by 266 percent.
