Can you tighten loose belly skin with exercise?

While there are ways to promote skin elasticity and malleability, shrinking sagging skin to a degree, exercise is not one of them. Instead, use exercise as a way to build muscle mass in your abdominal muscles. Increased muscle mass may fill the excess skin, giving your belly a smoother, healthy look.

If you've lost weight recently, you may notice sagging skin if your belly was an area that carried the excess weight. Your skin contains elastic properties that may tighten your belly skin naturally, but depending on the amount of time and weight that was carried, results can differ. Strengthening exercises can also help to aid in the appearance of sagging belly skin. While the exercise won't reduce the amount of sagging skin, it will fill it with muscle, making your skin appear tighter and your body appear more toned.

Sag a Lot?

Your skin is actually your body's largest organ. It is composed of many layers of tissues to protect your internal organs. The tissues contain collagen and elastin, two natural substances that give your skin malleable, elastic elements. Underneath all of the layers of tissue are fat deposits, which add an extra layer between your internal organs and your skin. The amount of fat deposits varies depending on the individual and is based on total body-fat percentage. Since your skin has naturally elastic qualities, it will stretch to accommodate the fat deposits underneath it everywhere, including your belly. After dramatic weight loss in the belly area, your skin won't shrink back immediately if there is less fat present. As a result, it can appear stretched, wrinkled or saggy.

Building Better Muscle

While there are ways to promote skin elasticity and malleability, shrinking sagging skin to a degree, exercise is not one of them. Instead, use exercise as a way to build muscle mass in your abdominal muscles. Increased muscle mass may fill the excess skin, giving your belly a smoother, healthy look. Imagine blowing up a balloon. As it fills with air, it stretches from a shriveled lump to a smooth surface. As you exercise, the empty, sagging skin will be replaced with developed muscle.

Better Belly Exercises

Building muscle mass in your stomach can be done by engaging in multiple exercises that build strength in your abdominal muscles. Crunches, sit-ups and plank posture are exercises you can do on your own at home to build muscle mass. At the gym, try the ab crunch machine. A well-rounded workout regimen also includes cardiovascular exercise, such as running or cycling. These exercises will not develop muscle in your core specifically, but cardiovascular exercise does send fresh oxygen to every organ, including your skin. As a result, skin growth and regeneration occurs, creating a smooth, less saggy look.
