Most people will go to extreme measures in a bid to burn belly fat, but it’s not always necessary. According to Medical News Today, you can burn up to 500 calories in your sleep as the body continues to work while we doze off. And to make the most of your weight loss, some studies have found that drinking a cup of tea can help to burn even more fat. It’s all to do with the link between fat around our middles and stress levels, which can slow down our metabolism. But if you can’t get a good night’s sleep, the one way to improve the quality is to have a cup of tea before bed.

Why can tea help with weight loss?

Stress comes in many different forms but their effect on our metabolisms is the same. The first step to reducing stress levels is by getting a good night’s sleep. And an easy way to improve the quality of your rest is by having a cup of pre-bed tea. This doesn’t mean diet teas, but more like a peppermint, chamomile or cinnamon infusion. Speaking about the benefits of cinnamon tea, nutritionist Helen Bond told The Sun: “Though it has a slight metabolism/thermogenic effect, it is more about balancing blood sugar and insulin resistance, which in turn aids weight loss and can lessen food cravings. "Again, this does not replace the need for dietary changes. A far better way of balancing blood sugar and insulin resistance is to follow a sugar-free, low-carbohydrate diet."

Can green tea encourage weight loss?

The benefits of drinking green tea are endless – one of these is weight loss. Green tea helps aiding weight loss by boosting metabolism because of the amount of antioxidants it contains. The antioxidants, vitamins and minerals in the drink will help melt the pounds away. One study has revealed how you can burn an extra 75-100 calories per day by drinking green tea.

How many meals a day to lose weight?

According to many experts, eating breakfast jump starts fat burning and 5–6 small meals per day prevent your metabolism from slowing down.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day…” or is it?

Conventional wisdom dictates that breakfast is a necessity, that it jump starts your metabolism for the day and helps you lose weight. What’s more, observational studies consistently show that breakfast skippers are more likely to be obese than people who eat breakfast ( 6 ). Yet correlation doesn’t equal causation. This data does not prove that breakfast helps you lose weight, just that eating breakfast is associated with a lower risk of being obese. This is most likely because breakfast skippers tend to be less health-conscious overall, perhaps opting for a doughnut at work and then having a big meal at McDonald’s for lunch. Everyone “knows” that breakfast is good for you, so people who have healthy habits overall are more likely to eat breakfast. However, there is no evidence that breakfast “jump starts” metabolism and makes you lose weight. Nevertheless, eating breakfast may benefit certain aspects of health. It appears that the body’s blood sugar control is better in the morning ( 7 ). Therefore, having a high-calorie breakfast results in lower average daily blood sugar levels compared to eating a high-calorie dinner ( 5 ). Also, one study in people with type 2 diabetes found that fasting until noon increased the rise in blood sugar after lunch and dinner ( 8 ). These effects are mediated by the body clock, also known as the circadian rhythm, but more studies are needed before scientists can fully understand how it works. People with diabetes and those who are concerned about their blood sugar levels should consider eating a healthy breakfast. But as general advice: If you are not hungry in the morning, skip breakfast. Just make sure to eat healthy for the rest of the day.
