Ozempic is in a class of medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. GLP-1 receptor agonists work by slowing down how quickly food leaves the stomach and helping the pancreas release insulin in response to high blood sugar levels after a meal. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Ozempic to be used in addition to weight loss, diet, and exercise to improve blood glucose control in individuals with Type 2 diabetes and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
