Any dietary supplement or related item that claims to burn extra fat from your body is referred to as a fat burner. Ms Pavithra N Raj, Chief Dietician, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital Yeshwanthpur says, "as we age, especially after the age of 40, the body's metabolism slows down and we tend to put on weight. Therefore, people tend to take fat-burning supplements to avoid excess fat. The fat supplements are taken to improve or increase the metabolism, reduce fat absorption, or help the body burn more fat to convert to energy." While some fat burners are naturally occurring, others are supplements or pills that might be ineffective at best or dangerous at worst. Dietician Pavithra N Raj shared all about fat supplements and their side effects. Here is everything you need to know.

Fat Supplements or Pills

Generally, supplements or pills will either reduce appetite, reduce the absorption of the fat, increase fat burning.

High Protein or Protein Supplements

It helps to burn fat by boosting metabolism and curbing appetite. It also helps the body preserve muscle mass.

Garcinia Cambogia

The fruit contains hydroxy citric acid, which is the active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia extract, which is marketed as a diet pill.

Glucomannan

It is a type of fibre found in the roots of the elephant yam. Glucomannan absorbs water and becomes a gel-like substance. It sits in the gut and promotes a feeling of fullness, helping one consume fewer calories.

Side Effects Of Artificial Fat Burning

Allergies: Some of the common symptoms of the pills are skin allergies, itching, stomach upsets, etc. Insomnia or lack of sleep: Stimulants (caffeine) found in fat burners change sleeping patterns which can also increase your heart rate, leading to sleep deprivation. Increased blood pressure: The result of a sped-up metabolism can lead to heart pumping faster than it should which can raise your blood pressure. Behavioural change: It is also common to see mood swings, rise in anxiety levels, higher blood pressure, emotional disturbances, Irritability, aggressiveness, and nervousness. Stomach problems: Fat burners can lead to stomach issues such as gas or bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, and other issues with bowel movements and sometimes black stools with rectal bleeding. Kidney problems: Excess of protein in this food can lead to kidney problems. Apple Cider Vinegar

It is made by crushing apples and fermenting the apple juice. Acetic acid contributes to weight loss. Consumption of apple cider vinegar also suppresses appetite. Reduced hunger leads to the consumption of fewer calories and finally contributes to weight loss.

Increase your intensity for 1 minute to a pace where you can barely hold a conversation. Follow this minute with a 1 minute slow pace rest interval. Continue this sequence for 15 minutes and finish with a 5 minute slow pace cool-down. This is a great start to burning off that body fat!
