What Is Apple Cider Vinegar? Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a type of vinegar made with crushed apples, yeast, and sugar. It's used as an ingredient in foods like salad dressings, pickles, and marinades. For many years, people have also used it as a home remedy for everything from fighting germs to preventing heartburn. More recently, research has shown that apple cider vinegar might have some real health benefits, such as helping to reduce blood sugar levels and aid weight loss. While there's not a lot of evidence for these benefits, ACV is generally harmless – as long as you use it correctly. What Are the Types of Apple Cider Vinegar? Apple cider vinegar is made through a process called fermentation. The yeast in the mixture digests the sugar in the apple juice, turning it into alcohol after a few weeks. Then, natural bacteria break the alcohol down into acetic acid, which gives vinegar its tangy taste and odor. Most ACV you find in the grocery store is the clear, pasteurized, and filtered type. But you can also buy raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar that contains a cloudy sediment. Called “the mother,” this substance is made up of settled bacteria and yeast. Some people give the mother credit for ACV's health benefits. And it's thought to contain small amounts of probiotics, healthy bacteria that are good for gut health. But research hasn’t shown that the mother offers any particular health benefit. The acetic acid in ACV is also thought to be at least partly responsible for any health benefits it has. But other types of vinegar contain acetic acid as well. You can also buy apple cider vinegar pills, powders, or gummies. But there's been little research into whether these supplements have any effect. And because the FDA doesn't regulate dietary supplements, you can't be sure exactly what's in them.

Is drinking apple cider vinegar everyday good for you?

ACV is generally safe when consumed in moderation — no more than 1 to 2 tablespoons (tbsp) daily. But drinking excessive amounts of ACV can decrease potassium to hazardous levels. ACV may interact with some medications (including diuretics, laxatives, and certain medications for diabetes and heart disease).

ACV has garnered superfood status, and fans of the vinegar say that it can cure nearly everything that ails you — weight gain, digestive issues, skin woes, and so on. Meanwhile, some companies tout ACV pills as a powerful source of vitamins and minerals, or for weight loss or “cleansing” support. Few studies support these uses, so while you can add it to your diet without significantly upping your risk for weight gain, it’s best to stay realistic about it. ACV’s main health benefits may be due to the amount of antioxidant polyphenols (or plant chemicals) it contains, thanks to the fermentation process. It’s also rich in probiotics , which may benefit the digestive system and gut microbiome

ACV and Weight Loss

ACV contains very few calories, so it can fit into your diet if you’re trying to lose or maintain weight. But you may also have heard that some people take a shot or tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to stimulate fat burning. The fact of the matter is that taking ACV is unlikely to change your body composition or weight. Registered dietitian Katherine Zeratsky points out that this thought doesn’t have scientific support behind it — and the only way to actually lose weight is through a generally healthy diet and by incorporating fitness into your routine. The advice is far less flashy than supplementing with something as trendy as ACV, but it’s exactly what really works. ACV and High Cholesterol

ACV may be beneficial for high cholesterol in some groups.
