Are McDonald's healthy?

McDonald's isn't known to be a healthy restaurant, but they do have some healthier things on the menu than just burgers and fries. If you fancy a Maccies, but don't want to eat too unhealthily, there is a way to do it, but it probably wouldn't be a recognisable balanced 'meal'.

If you fancy a Maccies, but don't want to eat too unhealthily, there is a way to do it, but it probably wouldn't be a recognisable balanced 'meal'. A saver menu cheeseburger, with a medium fries, a Coca Cola and a side of ketchup, adds up to 835kcal - almost half the recommended daily intake (2,000kcal a day). If you fancy a McFlurry for dessert, that's another 258kcal at least, or if you fancied a Big Tasty with Bacon (the biggest one on offer) instead of a cheeseburger, that's 850kcal just for the burger. If those numbers are a lot to stomach, LeicestershireLive has rounded up the least fattening food items on the McDonald's menu.

Side Salad

Unsurprisingly, the small side salad is the healthiest thing on the menu, as it contains just 15kcal. It contains 65kJ of energy, 0.5g of fat, no saturated fat, 1.5g of sugar and 0.05g of salt.

Carrot bag

The carrot bag is usually an option with the children's Happy Meal, instead of the more calorific side of fries - a small size contains 237kcal. The carrot bag contains 34kcal, 141kJ of energy, 0.2g of fat, 0.1g of saturated fat, 5.8g of sugar, 0.08g of salt.

Apple & Grape Fruit Bag

This is also an option with the Happy Meal, and contains 46kcal.

It also contains 194kJ of energy, 0.1g of fat, no saturated fat, 10g of sugar, and no salt at all.

Hash Brown

The next healthiest item on the menu is a bit of jump from the fruit bag. The McDonalds hash brown clocks in at 136kcal, with 568kJ of energy, 8.2g of fat, 0.8g of saturated fat, 0.3g of sugar and 0.68g of salt. The salt in the small hash brown accounts for 11 per cent of the recommended daily intake of salt.

The saturated fat in this item is 16 per cent of the recommended daily intake, while the sugar is 19 per cent. If you want a chocolate flake with that, it's an extra 43kcal on top.

Happy Meal Veggie Dippers - 2 pieces

The two piece Veggie Dipper option contains 160kcal, and is a Happy Meal option. It contains 670kJ of energy, 6.6g of fat, 0.7g of saturated fat, 1.2g of sugar and 0.57g of salt. The full Veggie Dipper portion comes with four pieces, which clocks in at 321kcal.

The Happy Meal portion of chicken nuggets contains 173kcal, with 722kJ of energy. The four piece portion contains 8.9g of fat, 1.2g of saturated fat, 0.4g of sugar, and 0.34g of salt.

Grilled chicken wrap

The Happy Meal also has the option of the grilled chicken wrap, which clocks in at 181kcal. It contains 766kJ of energy, 2.1g of fat, 0.8g of saturated fat, 3g of sugar and 0.79g of salt.

Fish fingers (3 fingers)

This is also a Happy Meal option, and the three fish fingers contain 194kcal. They contain 813kJ of energy, 8.5g of fat, 0.8g saturated fat, 0.5g of sugar and 0.69g of salt.

Sugar Donut

The only other item on the McDonald's menu that comes in under 200kcal is the sugar donut, from the dessert menu. It has 195kcal, with 813kJ of energy, 11g of fat, 4.4g of saturated fat, 6g of sugar and 0.41g of salt. The saturated fat in this item is 22 per cent of the recommended intake, and the fat is 15 per cent of the RDI. The upshot is, if you want to be healthy at McDonalds, you have to avoid burgers and fries, and generally stick to the Happy Meal sized portions.
